We have collated all our debunk facts below in case the algorithm didn’t get you their. These are randomly listed and not ordered in accordance with a specific theme.
You may be asking where do these facts come from? Where is it written and or stipulated? This is very important and ties back to Debunk #12. Islam is extracted from two sources of revelation, Quran and Sunnah which complement each other.
Therefore, learning Islamic knowledge from sound Islamic scholars that have rigorously studied both, know Arabic and the grammar is essential.
Debunk #1 - Muslim women don’t shower with the headscarf, they take it off at home. All women and some men such as her husband, father, brothers, uncles, step-father and grandfather etc. are allowed to see the women’s hair.
Debunk #2 - Domestic Violence isn't allowed in Islam. Men aren't allowed to beat their wife or cause physical harm.
Debunk #3 - Not all muslims are Arabs. In facts only about 20% of Muslims are Arab. The top 5 countries with highest number of muslims are from non-Arab speaking majority countries such as Indonesia, India etc.
Debunk #4 - Cleanliness is very very important in Islam. Muslims wash certain parts of their body daily such as hands, arms, face and feet up to five times a day in preparation for prayer. This practise is known as Ablution in English or Wu'du.
Debunk #5 - Islam allows Women to inherit, own a business, gain an education, decline a marriage proposal, ask for a divorce with reason and so forth. Though, the setting or context in which this occurs may be different to the west. E.g you may see segregation between the two genders at schools or gatherings. Anyone contradicting the above rights is probably following Un-Islamic ignorant customs or culture or tribal practises.
Debunk #6a - Islam is a religion, not a culture nor cult. Muslims follow the Quran which is the verbatim (exact) word of God. Islam acknowledges other Abrahamic religions to be truthful such as Christianity and Judaism as well as the corresponding prophets and past scriptures. However, Islam tells us that these religions where for that specific nation or community and that time. Muslims believe these scriptures have also been tampered over time and now carry truth with falsehood. The Quran is the final book for all of mankind, ordered by God to be followed. The Quran has been preserved, makes bold statements about life and challenges its readers to think and reflect. The Quran also talks about past events and other prophets.
Debunk #6b - The Quran is the divine verbatim word of God transmitted by angel Jibril to Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) (The final prophet 600 years after Jesus). Muslims do not worship Prophet Muhammed, rather we follow his teachings that were inspired and commanded by God.
Debunk #6c - Jesus from an Islamic perspective.
Islam strongly rejects the Trinity. Jesus the son of Mary is only a prophet, not God, he used to eat and sleep just like us humans. He was born miraculously without a father just as Adam existed without both parents. Jesus was not crucified, rather someone was made to look like him and he will come back towards the end of times.
Debunk #7a - Islam is about strict Monotheism. Muslims do not worship the Kabba ( Black and Gold house In Saudi Arabia). Muslims worldwide pray to the direction of the Kabba. A compass or apps are available for people from far away to determine the correct direction.
Debunk #7b- Islam doesn't encourage us to pray to God and then just sit at home at wait for our prayers to be manifested. Rather one needs to also take action, seek and take steps towards achieving those goals. In layman terms, one needs to go out work hard and try (known as Sa’y in Arabic).
Debunk #8 - P O L Y G A M Y is OPTIONAL in Islam.
Men don't have to marry 4 wives but they can. This ruling came over 1400 years ago at a time when men were marrying an infinite number of women and treating them unjustly. Islam has put a limit and set boundaries. Marrying more than one means being just in spending equally on all of the wives, spending equal amount of time with them and being as emotionally just as possible towards loving each one equally (as emotions is beyond ones control).
Debunk #9 - We don't have an English Quran rather an English Translation of the Quran. The Quran is the verbatim word of God, revealed in Arabic and transmitted to Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) through Angel Jibril. English translations are available and make it accessible to non-Arabic readers. We always recommend you read the Tafsir (Scholarly Interpretation and explanation) if in doubt of the actual meaning and context. Some verses are clear while others aren’t and it is a test in itself to learn the truth.
Debunk #10 - Islam is not a religion exclusive to Arabs or even for Arabs. It is for all mankind. Arabic was chosen as the best of languages.
Debunk # 11 - To honour a deceased person is to burry them.
Islam does not allow cremation (burning a body) rather Muslims are buried in graves. After death, a muslim is washed with water, lote (sidr) leaves and camphor then wrapped in a white cloth and buried towards direction of Makkah and physically positioned to the right. The burial of a dead person occurs very promptly, usually on the same or next few days.
Debunk #12 - Less known fact
The divine revelation for Muslims are TWO sources, The Quran and Sunnah.
The Quran is the verbatim word of God. The sunnah is not verbatim word of God, it is revelation inspired by God to Prophet Muhammed (saw). The sunnah is legal ways, orders, acts of worship and statements said by the prophet (pbuh). These are preserved as sayings and were written down by the prophets family members, companions and are still available today. The sunnah is like the more specific details of Islam. E.g you would find in the sunnah the exact actions and much detail on how the prophet (pbuh) prayed, what he said and did in every rakah, who should pray, when to pray etc. In the Quran you may find a statement that praying is compulsory. Though, this is just a rough example.
Debunk #13 - N A M E S - A muslim women isn't allowed to change her last name to the husband’s name after marriage.
A bit of background, A muslim (male or female) is named after the father's and forefathers.
e.g the name - Adam Ahmed Ibrahim Essa
Let’s break this name down, Adam is the persons chosen given first name, Ahmed is Adam's father, Ibrahim is Adam's grandfather and Essa is Ibrahims Father or Adams Great Great Grandfather. This is how the naming system usually works for muslims and some non-muslim Arabs too, Though many add Ibn or ibnatu which is more correct and literally means the son of or the daughter of.
Some Reasons name change isn't allowed (List not exhaustive)
— There is no blood tie between a husband and wife, so she is technically not part of the same lineage to be named after him.
— The wife is attributing herself to someone other than her real father with no lineage.
— A person will be called by their fathers name on day of judgement
— Calling a person by the fathers name is more appropriate in knowing the lineage or family of the person and tracing them back especially when it comes to inheritance.
Debunk #14 - The terrible experience that some tourists may face, especially women in some muslim majority countries is UNISLAMIC.
Staring, Inflated tourist prices, catcalling and harassment isn't part of Islamic Teachings. In addition, this doesn’t only happen in muslim countries and usually occurs where poverty exists.
Debunk #15
The word Israel is mentioned in the Quran and refers to Prophet Jacob (Yaqub), the father of Prophet Joseph (Yusuf), NOT modern day Isnotrreal the genocidal entity.
Check out this short 11 min video with an explanation of the origin of the name. More on this here via a short video
Debunk #16 - Islam is not just a religion, its a complete way of Life.
Islam has compulsory and optional guidelines to help people live their life. From manners, business dealings, food to eat, cleanliness, marriage, divorce, death, inheritance, and war etc. Everything is available and aimes to bring justice, fairness, and develop upright communities built on morals.
Debunk #17 - Not all Muslims follow Islam correctly
Muslims are humans, not angels. They make mistakes, say and do things wrong sometimes. That's why it's very important to learn Islam from scholars, knowledgable people and accurate online sources that quote both sources of revelation and have a sound understanding of Arabic and the Quran.
Debunk #18 - You don’t need to learn Arabic to be a Muslim
Though, you would need to eventually learn a few Arabic words to pray. Knowing Arabic is a very useful thing to have if you want to dive deeper into Islam.
